Material, span and sill interact
The material choice is not independent of the opening. Span narrows the material options, and the sill decision interacts with both. See sills and thresholds.
Primary bi-fold lines on the account today are Milgard, Windoor, and Windsor. If a spec names another folding-wall manufacturer, send it — we will say whether we can source it or which carried line meets the same opening.
What does aluminum-clad wood mean?
Wood on the interior face, aluminum on the exterior. You get the interior finish of a wood door without the exterior maintenance. Windsor is the line we carry in it.
Which material spans the widest?
Aluminum and aluminum-clad systems generally take the widest practical residential spans. Vinyl and fiberglass cover most everyday openings well; when the wall gets very wide, material choice narrows fast — which is why we size the opening before we sell the frame.
Is vinyl a downgrade?
Not automatically, and the Windoor vinyl system is a genuinely good door. Where vinyl runs out is very wide spans and certain colour and finish requirements. We would rather tell you which of those applies to your opening than steer you up a tier for no reason.
